Title: Borne

Author: Judith Thompson and the Rare Theatre Company

Year: 2014

Geography: Americas > Northern America > Canada

Synopsis: Borne is a play that was created through an initiative that was started to showcase the talents and abilities of actors with disabilities. The actors created the script with acclaimed Canadian playwright; Judith Thompson and we hear the various stories that each of the nine actors has been through and how they are striving for accessibility in the arts and in their everyday life. Two of the performers discuss in their monologues about how they immigrated to Canada in their youth; Nikoletta moved from Hungary, where she was born with a rare condition and the other actor, Nancy, arrived at the age of 13, prior to her accident that caused her paralysis. Both actors discuss language barriers for themselves when they were children, and they do discuss accessibility issues while travelling abroad. Though the play is not fully about immigration, there are aspects in which Nikoletta sings a traditional song from her homeland, which demonstrates the need for connection to where she is from.

Publication: The play was published in 2015 and produced in collaboration with Rare Theatre Company and Soulpepper Theatre in the summer of 2014.
