Synopsis: Lady in the Red Dress is a darkly comic noir-inflected drama that follows Max, a Canadian government lawyer involved in negotiating redress for the Chinese Head Tax, whose life unravels when he is haunted by Sylvia, a mysterious femme fatale who forces him into a violent, surreal journey through past and present to confront the buried histories of Chinese Canadian exclusion. Blending elements of ghost story, revenge tragedy, and hard-boiled noir with non-linear, time-shifting scenes, the play adopts a highly stylized aesthetic that merges realism with hallucination and historical reenactment. It situates migration within a context of state-imposed exclusion, racialized labour, and intergenerational diaspora shaped by the Head Tax and Exclusion Act, foregrounding not movement but the long afterlife of discriminatory border regimes. By collapsing personal narrative with national history, the work interrogates Canada’s legacy of anti-Chinese policies, exposing how denial, delayed redress, and institutional complicity continue to shape the present, and raising ethical questions about responsibility, historical accountability, and whether justice can ever truly be achieved after systemic injustice.
