Synopsis: This production of Anowa follows a young woman who rejects the marriage arranged by her parents and leaves Yebi with Kofi Ako. The couple become travelling traders whose wealth eventually depends upon enslaved trade and labour. Their initial departure offers freedom from family authority but their mobility becomes ethically compromised once it is sustained by the forced movement of other people. The production links voluntary migration to the history of the slave trade, considering each in its intricate history. It exposes how one’s person mobility may depend upon another person being denied control over where they live.
